They may look a little different when they go on sale, but cmon...Nissan would be stupid not to bring the Terra here.

Kinja'd!!!

We know a new frontier is coming to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! soon and that its likely heavily based on the Navara. The Nissan Terra is based on the Navara and would compete directly with the 4Runner. The Terra is a little bigger than an Xterra being a 3 row vehicle but honestly it wouldn’t take much to redesign it from the b pillar back to be shorter and have the signature double step roof.

Would be cool for Toyota to have some competition in the off road SUV segment.

Nissan hasn’t done anything smart recently. Nothing has been updated, and everything that is new is ugly. Even 80% of the Infiniti’s are getting long in tooth

Thats why not bringing a new pickup and SUV to a pickup and SUV mad market would be insanely stupid. Like Impossible that anyone is actually this stupid kind of stupid.

Bring the thing straight over. The 4Runner, that smug-ass bastard, has enjoyed basically no real competition for too long. Too long!

Im okay with that. Competition is good. It would make it comparable in price and size to a 4runner where the xterra was always smaller, but I don’t think thats necessarily a bad thing.

Even if it was half the price, I don’t think enough people would pick it over the reliable and slowly depreciating 4Runner. Even though it’s quite long in the tooth.

I think you would be suprised. And if Nissan came in with something (gasp) semi modern it might convert a few buyers. I mean if Nissan has a chance to out modern ANY car on the market its going to be the 4runner.

They really tried with the Titan. I mean they did. Too bad they hitched their wagon to the cummins 5.0. Every other truck make passed on it for a reason.

Nothing says boring car like a bright gross colour..

I think they should get something over here to counter the T4R, nice clean Xterras still look great. Suburbia is already jammed full of Rogues, Muranos and old Xtrails. I walk by a house that has both a Highlander and a ‘Pathfinder’ parked side by side..

They just made a pointless truck. It tows less than an F150, has the maintenance costs of an F250, and weighs as much as the sun.

The problem for you lot is that the Terra is currently China and South East Asia only. Nissan Oz want it but it’s no shoe-in despite that (primarily because BoF SUVs are selling at a comparatively glacial pace to other SUV and pickups).

The US wouldn’t get it unless both it and the Navara were made in North America. That just isn’t going to happen... especially in the current environment.

Perhaps if Ford’s Ranger and Bronco experiment is successful then Nissan and Toyota might come and play in the sandpit with their new modern toys...but I honestly doubt it.

They have production capacity at Canton and they share a common assembly. Totally doable.

Kinja'd!!!0

No question it’s doable but it won’t happen unless there’s proof that mid size pick-ups (with excellent profit margins) are truly a thing in North America.

Quite honestly, Renault Nissan Mitsubishi will get better volume and per vehicle profit for the Terra in SE Asia and China. That’s why it’s a thing there and not in North America (or anywhere else for that matter).

Maybe... the 3 people I know with 4Runners bought a body on frame SUV because they go out in the sticks to hike, fly fish, camp, or in to go to their cabin. Where roads aren’t paved, and somewhat far from civilization. Reliability is why they chose the 4Runner. No one wants to be stranded that far away from home.

But I bet a lot of other 4Runner owners never leave the suburbs.

I argue that the Terra should wear the Pathfinder nameplate instead, because everyone wants to forget about the current one (which is due for an update soon), and it maintains the tradition of the Pathfinder being directly based on the pickup of the era. Not to mention the last decent Pathfinder was also a “5+” seater the size of the 4Runner.

I don’t know what the Terra has for suspension, but the Navara’s five-link rear and double-wishbone front happens to be the same setup that the first WD21 Pathfinder had. It would make for a great back-to-basics revival.

they’re already committed to the frontier here....which will be a us version of the navara so its safe to say they made up their minds on the ute part of the market, and 4runner sales are on fire right now

the mountains and deserts here are lousy with 4runner, people use them here for sure. its not that the frontier isnt reliable and people having been using the navara in the australian bush for years safely

All Cummins 5.0 constrains. It wouldn’t compete against 3/4 ton but the engine wouldn’t meet emissions in the 2a class so they had to pork it up to for in 2b. Because it’s so heavy yet doesn’t have 3/4 axles it has crap payload and towing.

Toyota looked at using this engine and passed. Ram looked at using it and passed. They must have given Nissan a great deal.

It’s funny though as I (and most Aussies I assume) would regard both the Tacoma and 4Runner as a size class up from the Navara, Hilux and Ranger (and their wagon equivalents) that we are used to.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > SilentButNotReallyDeadly...killed by G/O Media
05/31/2018 at 22:34

Tacoma is about 3 inches longer and maybe an inch wider than a Hilux. 4runner is just a Prado 150 with a less useful body and the petrol 4.0

05/31/2018 at 23:08

Kinja'd!!!1

There you go...in the marketing stakes that would put them both a size class up down here. Even though they all (Hilux, Fortuner, Prado, Tacoma and 4Runner) could run the same 1GR V6 engine. Strange times...

I just want a truck that can potentially get 20 MPG highway, is decently reliable, has offroad chops, can swallow a good amount of people and gear, and isn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg. Ok so that’s a decent list. So far my potential Silverado replacements (in 1-2 years from now) are the 05-07 Sequoias (but those are going to be OLD trucks) and a GMT900 Tahoe. LC100s will be too old, LC200s will have that Toyota tax and get shit fuel mileage, and US-spec Y62s get even shittier mileage. 5th gen 4Runners are/will be too expensive and are (probably) too small.

What is above a hilux there? I know you can go to 70 series but I didn’t realize there was an option just above it.

that 20 mpg highway thing is indeed a tough find if you are also looking for affordability.

Kinja'd!!! adamftw > HammerheadFistpunch
06/01/2018 at 13:53

Kinja'd!!!1

Affordability is relative I guess. The newer trucks do better on fuel, but they’re also filled with unnecessary shit and ECU controlled everything. The one thing that turns me off the most about LC100s is that only the first two years have a head unit you can change out. I’d hate living with a terrible, “old” high-end system. Tahoe makes the most sense, but it’s also the most boring. I really like the first gen Sequoias, the GX is a maybe, I’ve never even been in one.

In the utes, it’s just Hilux and 70 Series. If you want a proper load carrier the next step up from the 70 is a Hino cab over (which can be cheaper than Hilux!).

In the SUV wagons it’s RAV4, Kluger (you call it something else), Fortuner, Prado, 70 Series and 200 Series.

So here is chr, rav4/nx200, Highlander/rx350 (kluger), 4runner/gx, 200/lx, Sequoia. No fortuna though many people still mistakenly believe the 4runner is a Tacoma wagon.
